Friendly Crossways is located in the town of Harvard, 50 km from Harvard
University, and accessible by commuter train. A century-old New England
barn and farmhouse has been renovated to accommodate up to 65 people in
a combination of dormitory and private rooms. We have large and small
meeting places, a big kitchen, piano, fireplace, volleyball & basketball courts,
organic flower and vegetable gardens, and hiking trails.

Learn about Shaker communal life and Native Americans at Fruitlands
Museums in Harvard. There are miles of country roads suitable for bicycling
as well as hiking and mountain biking) trails, some bike rail trails and wildlife
conservation areas in Harvard and adjacent towns as well as canoeing or
kayaking on the Nashua River with Nashoba Paddler.

Thirteen miles from Friendly Crossways, by train, you can take a Literary
Tour of Louisa May Alcott's and Ralph Waldo Emerson's homes, and
Thoreau's Walden Pond and Lyceum, and visit the site of the "shot heard
`round the world" in Concord; browse through the DeCordva Museum and
Sculpture Park in Lincoln; check out suits of armor and American art in
Worcester; and visit Lowell, home to national museums featuring the
American Industrial Revolution and American Quilts. Of course there's loads
of things to see in Boston, which is an hour's train ride away.

By TRAIN from Boston, North Station: Monday - Friday catch
Fitchburg/Acton commuter train no. 433 at 18:15 (6:15 pm) from North
Station, get off at Littleton/495 stop, which is about three miles from hostel.
Call 978/456-3649 from Littleton train stop; chances are good that we'll pick
you up, especially with 24-hour notice.
Saturday catch train no. 1413 leaving No. Station at 19:30 (7:30 pm).
Sunday take train no. 2405 at 17:30 (5:30 pm).

From Boston, South Station take Red line subway to Porter Square in
Cambridge and catch the train ten minutes after it leaves North Station.

From BOSTON AIRPORT: Public transport: take free airport bus shuttle to
BlueLine subway stop. Go INBOUND ($1), transfer at State stop to Orange
Line, go to North Station to catch commuter train. Not convenient if you
have a lot of luggage. Taxi to North Station costs about $10.

By CAR: Directions FROM Logan International Airport (BOS):

Exit from Airport toward Boston. Take Ted Williams Tunnel (pay toll of
$3.00), then follow directions to get on to Rte. 90 WEST, pay two $1 tolls,
and exit at Rte. 95 NORTH. Take 95 North to Exit 29B and take Rte. 2
WEST toward Concord. When you get to round-about/rotary in Concord DO
NOT TAKE RTE 2A . Go 1/2-way on the rotary to continue on Rte. 2. The
exit numbers will start up again a mile after the rotary. Take Exit 39 (Taylor
St., Littleton/Boxboro exit). Turn left onto Taylor St., go just under a mile
then turn left onto Whitcomb Ave., (there's a "Peace of Mind" child day care
center at the corner of Taylor and Whitcomb Ave.). Whitcomb Ave. in
Littleton will turn into Littleton County Rd. in Harvard after about 1.7 miles.
Keep going! IGNORE THE HOUSE NUMBERS! Hostel is located another 1/3
mile down the road at 247 Littleton County Rd. on the right.

Other Airports in vicinity: Warwick (Providence RI) is an easily accessible
one hour &15 minutes away on highway 93 and 495. Manchester NH (55
minutes away) and Hartford CT (1.5 hr) are also smaller, easily accessible
airports to Friendly Crossways with cheaper rental cars than in Boston.

Directions FROM Rt. 2 East (Boston /Concord area): If coming from the east
(i.e, Boston or Cambridge) take Rte. 2 West, DO NOT TAKE RTE 2A when
you get to round-about/rotary in Concord. Go 1/2-way on the round-about
to continue on Rte. 2. The exit numbers will start up again a mile after the
round-about. Take Exit 39 (Taylor St., Littleton/Boxboro exit). Turn left
onto Taylor St., go just under a mile then turn left onto Whitcomb Ave.,

From I-495, North or South: take exit 29B to Rte. 2 West, stay in the right
lane and almost IMMEDIATELY take Exit 39. Follow Rt. 2 directions as above.

Directions from points South or West: Find your way to Rte 90, which is the
Mass Pike, and go East toward Worcester. Take the Auburn Exit on to Rte.
290 going East through Worcester. About 5 miles beyond Worcester you
get onto Rte. 495 NORTH and follow directions as above.
