Protecting Oneself while Traveling |
As countless international travelers have unfortunately discovered, whether you're in Rome or Rio, Rotterdam or Reno, there are more than are characters lurking about who'd like nothing better than to part you from your valuables.
1. Be aware! Recognize your vulnerability.
2. Use the "buddy system" and watch out for your neighbor.
3. Avoid traveling alone at night.
4. Confine walking to well-lit, regularly traveled walks and pathways. Avoid short-cuts, and keep away from shrubbery, bushes, alleyways, or any other areas where an assailant might be lurking.
5. If confronted by an assailant, remember It is extremely important to remain as calm as possible and to assess the situation before choosing a course of action. Whether or not the assailant is armed or makes threats against your life will, obviously, be a determining factor in making a decision. The key word in this type of situation is survival.
6. Stay Aware we might almost say "Stay awake." We're all often daydreaming, I think. Stay aware, wherever you are, whatever you are doing. This is really just the same as the idea of "being present" - leading not only to being safer, but potentially to greater enjoyment of the moment by moment experience of being alive.
7. Trust Your Intuition If your intuition is warning you, there IS something wrong. Trust it, and act to increase your safety.
8. The best advice is to do all you can to blend in with the crowd.
9. Don't display expensive jewelry, cameras, bags, and other items that might draw attention.
10. Check maps before you go out so you can tour confidently.
11. Stick to well-lighted, well-traveled streets at all times - no shortcuts.
12. Always lock your car when it's parked, even if the stop is brief. Keep valuables out of sight, preferably locked in the trunk. Don't advertise that you're a tourist by leaving maps and guidebooks on the seat or dashboard - keep them in the glove compartment.
13. Do not flash large amounts of money. Keep your wallet out of sight unless you are making a purchase.
14. Keep your keys in your hand while walking to the car. Do not look through your purse or pockets for your keys. This will give people an opportunity to sneak up on you.
15. Always wear your seat belt. This will protect you in the event of an accident.
16. Avoid carrying large amounts of cash. You should carry no more than $50 to $100 in cash at any one time. This will protect you from losing all your money if you are mugged or robbed.
17. Keep your handbag or purse tucked under your arm. This should stop people from trying to grab it as they run by.
18. Cash not in your wallet can be put in a money belt. A money belt is a small purse-like device that you wear strapped to your body. It is great for carrying cash, traveler's checks, and important documents like your passport. Make sure you do not let anyone see that you have it on.
19. The status of travel warnings for your destination and the surrounding region.
20. The level of local political stability.
21. The risks posed by local criminal activity.
22. The nature of local emergency medical care.
23. Any country specific issues relative to assaults against women.
24. In many parts of the world, poor sanitary conditions can harbor illnesses that can cause serious harm to your health. Unfortunately, water and food can also be a source of contagion, and climate can also make for conditions needed to spread disease, such as in the case of mosquitoes infected with malaria.
25. Everyone must use good judgment and common sense in the places they go, how they get there, and the times they visit those places.
26. Let someone know of your whereabouts, the route you plan to use, and when you plan to return.
27. Date rape or acquaintance rape is a sexual assault that is committed by someone the victim knows. It is rape and rape is a crime of violence. Remember, the person who has attacked you has committed a crime, not you!
